Аннотация: В монографической сводке обобщены материалы многолетних исследований биологии, занесенного в Красную книгу представителя рода Phoca островного тюленя (Phoca vitulina stejnegeri), обитающего в северо-западной части Тихого океана. К анализу, кроме собственных данных, привлечены имеющиеся литературные сведения, на основе которых проведено полномасштабное сравнение рассматриваемых в монографии вопросов биологии этого тюленя с аналогичными по другим подвидам, обитающим в иных частях его ареала. Впервые предпринята попытка описания всех систем органов (кроме мышечной), роста и развития. Рассмотрены размножение, питание, распределение, численность. Дано описание стаций. Отдельная глава монографии посвящена проблеме охраны местообитаний и сохранению поголовья в условиях нарастающего антропогенного воздействия на биоресурсы в акватории островов заселенных островным тюленем. Книга предназначена для зоологов, морфологов, экологов, биогеографов, специалистов в области охраны природы, студентов и преподавателей высших учебных заведений. This monographic review summarizes materials of many years of biological studies dedicated to the insular seal (Phoca vitulina stejnegeri), the Northwestern Pacific species of the Phoca genus, which was inscribed in the Red Data List. An additional to our own data, the analysis abounds with numerous available literature sources, giving the ground for a comprehensive comparison of issues of the seal’s biology, being considered in the monograph, with those concerning other similar subspecies that inhabit various parts of its range. An attempt is made for the first time to describe all the organ systems (except for the muscular one), as well as body growth and development. Breeding, feeding, distribution and abundance issues are also viewed. Description of habitats, is made. One chapter of the monograph is devoted to the problems of this species environment protection and conservation of its population in view of steadily growing anthropogenic pressure on biological resources in the area of islands inhabited by insular seal. The book is aimed at zoologists, morphologists, ecologists, biogeography’s, specialists in the field of environment protection, as well as at higher education lecturers and students.
